22nd May "Brooklands Breakfast Run"

Brooklands Museum, Weybridge Surry KT13 0QN

A big thanks to all the members, friends and family who came along to the spring “Brooklands Breakfast” I organised for the WDCVC.

Our 9 strong convey headed off from Scotsbridge Mill a little after 7:00am, heading off down the M25 joining it at unction 17 at Maple Cross. As we travelled the weather got better and better from a slightly overcast and brisk start, to a fair bit of sun as we arrived at the gates to get our tickets at around 7:45am.

This time the lovely Donna from the Brooklands events squad had put us in our own reserved spaces opposite the pits, where you can park up in a Le Mans esque formation. This made for some rather nice pictures of our classics!

After scoffing our ‘Full English’ we ventured out to see the sites. I had two missions today; one was to try test hill, the other was to sample the Concorde experience! With a little time to kill we had a wander until it was time to book up for each.

First off at 10:30 was test hill where Gary Price and myself got a full briefing and with red wristbands affixed we headed back to our cars to join the line up ready to do battle. We both took it easy on the first go and I was pleasantly surprised with the Little Boxes rate of acceleration as he whizzed up the hill. The second great pleasure of doing the test hill is that to get back to the start, for another go means you have to drive along part of the old circuit, which was great! After my allotted 3 goes it was time to go back to the pits.

After I parked up, got our flag back up, it was off to Concorde. I had dismissed this a little, thinking it was just a walk through but after hearing what went on inside last year from another member I decided this time I would try. I was not disappointed! After a brief talk about Concorde in one of the transit buses of the era we then climbed aboard the rear half of the plane. The first part had been stripped so you could see the guts of the inside, then on to some lovely displays of components, equipment and interior items. Then on further to the last and best bit of the experience, the ride! Yes they have rigged up in the front half a full set of seats where you can sit as if you were a passenger. There is a video screen at the front accompanied with the genuine air speed and height indicator displays passenger would have viewed when it was in service. On the screen you see a stationary Concorde ready for taxi and take off, then as the image moves so the seat starts to vibrate and the on board speakers give you a wonderful idea of the jets as the taps are opened for take off. Then up to 60,000ft through Mach 1 then on to Mach2. A truly fantastic experience and one well worth having!

Yes this trip was full of new adventures and I have discovered yet more new hangers, sheds and workshops to explore ready for next time!

Enjoy the pictures…
